Charlie Williams

(Representative Mississippi)

Mississippi State legislator and junketteer extraordinaire, who accompanied Andrew Whist on many Philip Morris 'study trips' to exotic locations , including on one occasion, the Superbowl. He was also a key member of the Council of State Governments, which (along with Philip Morris's fake organisations) laundered the operations.

1997 Aug 4: Wall Street Journal article "Tobacco-Funded Group gives legislators Free Trips." details the many junkets for politicians organised and run by Philip Morris's Corporate Affairs department (headed by Andrew Whist). These junkets were organised through the National Governor's Association (NGA) and the Council on State Governments (CSG) — and supposedly funded by the fake tobacco-controlled business societies, the New York Society for International Affairs (NYSIA) and American-European Community Association (AECA).

For a member of the Mississippi legislature, Charlie Williams gets around.

In the past two years Mr Williams has gone to Spain, Belgium, Australia and Costa Rica all courtesy of the NYSIA.

The non-profit New York Society. it turns receives almost all of its funding from PM. [State Attorney-General Mike] Moore, who just helped his state collect the first installment on a $3.4 billion settlement with the tobacco industry has been a major thorn in PM side. Mr Williams opposes the lawsuit Moore filed against Big Tobacco and says. "It is unfair that the state can go to court and sue when tobacco is a legal entity that has paid taxes."

...the trips sponsored by the NYSIA provide a vehicle for lawmakers to travel without any special-interest strings showing. A few years ago, for example, Mr Williams drew criticism for letting PM pay his way to the SuperBowl...

On the NYSIA Costa Rica trip June 13-19 1997
